Digi Tacho Questions & Answers

These are a few of the most common questions that we have been asked. We have more information including info on Operator and Workshop cards. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have not found the answer to your query.

Q. What is in the VU memory?

A. Manufacturer date on VU and sensor; VIN and Vehicle Reg Number; Security elements; Events - eg overspeed, tampering; Faults - problems with the card/unit; Driver's identity and activities; Odometer readings; workshop data - calibration etc, and control activities (DVSA and Police)

Q. How much memory does the VU have?

A. The VU can hold enough data for 365 days with average use. It will hold detailed speed data for the last 24 hours of actual driving time.

Q. What happens when the memory is full?

A. Once the memory is full the unit will start to overwrite the data from the beginning (i.e. the oldest will be overwritten first) The only way to save data that will be overwritten is to download it first.

Q. Can the data be viewed?

A. Yes, on the VU screen, printed out or downloaded.

Q. How do I know if the VU is working correctly?

A. The system runs self tests and will tell you if there is a fault with it
.

DRIVER CARD

Q. Who should apply for a smart card?

A. If you are going to need to drive a vehicle subject to the EU drivers' hours regulation then you will need to apply for a driver card.

Q. How much will it cost?

A. The most up to date information suggests that a Driver card will cost £32 for the initial application, and £19 for a renewal or replacement card.

Q. Can my employer keep my card for me?

A. NO. It is personal to you and you are responsible for the safe keeping of it. The card should never be left lying around, lent to anyone else, or left in a vehicle not under your control. Any driving or duty recorded on it will be recorded against you and proving that it wasn't you may be very difficult. If another driver uses your card it can be withdrawn or suspended by an enforcement officer, possibly preventing you from driving during that time.

Q. What if I forget my card?

A. You will not be able to drive a vehicle fitted with a digital tacho if you do not have your driver card with you.

Q. Does it tell me the hours driven?

A. You can check your current times by the display on the VU, or a print out. Also the unit will give a warning 15 minutes prior to a driving period being completed.

Q. How do I show ferry crossings or other work?

A. You will be able to enter data at the time. It is not possible to enter data later or at the end of the shift.

Q. Can I change the mode at a later time if I forget?

A. No, all mode changes are in real time and MUST be done at the time.

Q. I'm an agency driver, does that matter?

A. No, you still apply for a card and use it if a digital tacho is fitted. The company you are working for may download the data at the end of your shift or at the end of the working period for that company.
